Innkeepers Samantha Laskowski and Len Krupinski fell in love with the Kickapoo Valley on their many trips to the area. Samantha grew up the hill country of Vernon County and Len came from the south side of Chicago. The rugged outcroppings, natural springs, blue skies and green valleys of this place made them decide to make the Kickapoo Valley their home.

Their journey toward living a more sustainable lifestyle began more than 15 years ago. Four guiding principles (based on the Natural Step) are their cornerstone:

1) Avoid substances extracted from the Earth’s crust.

2) Reduce economic dependence on persistent substances.

3) Do not take more from the biosphere than what can be replenished naturally.

4) Avoid creating conditions that undermine the ability of others to meet their needs.

They used these principles to guide their choices for everything from renovating their home to furnishings furnishing the rooms to the food they eat and serve. They strive to live a lifestyle that is simple, sustainable and satisfying.
